Upon staring at the gloriously naked pictures of the Pirelli Calendar models, one swoons not only to their bodies but to the how each shot was taken, in some awkwardness, making it sexy and perfect with subtle imperfections. The photographer, Mario Sorrenti, admits that he wanted to do push sexuality by using clothes to increase the appeal without showing too much skin, or trying the wet clothes effect, but in the end he ended up focusing on the body. He said: “Sometimes it was very sculptural. Sometimes it was just very simple. I didn’t want to focus on the obvious sexuality of the woman. I was more interested in the anatomy and the beauty of the figure and shape; if the muscles were tensing or something like that. I wanted to let the photographs be something that came from the model in her own way as well.”

What made him achieve in having delicate and subtle touches to the photos was his desire for the models to be influenced by their environment. He added: I wanted that serenity to be shared. And I wanted there to be a marriage between the beauty of the landscape and the model’s beauty.”

The Pirelli Company has been publishing a limited edition of classy pin-up girl calendars for an exclusive list of celebrities and Pirelli VIPs since 1964. This year, a collection of photos of beautiful subjects containing artistic, groundbreaking and empowered sophistication grazed the Cal as it launches at The Armory in New York with the title, “Swoon.”  He explained: ‘In “swoon”, I put the bodies in direct contact with Nature, which harbours them as if they were its extension, in a set of images where rocks, land, tree trunks, sky and sea are all turned into a backdrop for the bodies.’

The shoot was supposed to take place in Big Sur, which was the photographer’s original idea, but it was too cold. He decided to take the shoot to Corsica, wherein there was a ‘huge farm”. All the models and crew stayed together ate together, in some kind of uber-glam summer camp. Spending the morning with one girl and the evening with another one, Sorrenti could easily be the envy of other men. Models and actresses included  Isabeli Fontana, Natasha Poly, Saskia de Brauw, Lara Stone, Joan Smalls, Guinevere van Seenus, Malgosia Bela, Edita Vilkevicute, Kate Moss, Milla Jovovich, Margareth Made, and Rinko Kikuchi.

Fashion photography began in the 19th century.

In 1856 photographer Adolphe Braun published a book with 288 photographs of Virginia Oldoini (a Tuscan noblewoman at the court of Napoleon III) in her official court garb, making her the first Fashion Model .

In the first decade of 20th century we can see fashion photographs in magazines. First fashion magazine La mode practique began in France . Then in 1909, Condé Nast took over Vogue magazine and also contributed to the beginnings of fashion photography .
In 1911, The publisher of Jardin des Modes and La Gazette du Bon Ton Lucien Vogel promoted fashion as a fine art with photographs by photographer Edward Steichen. Under Jesse Alexander’s words, This is ” …now considered to be the first ever modern photography shoot” .

Vogue and his rivals, Harpers Bazaar and two more were leaders of fashion photography throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Famous Photographers such as Edward Steichen, George Hoyningen-Huene, Horst P. Horst and Cecil Beaton have changed Fashion Photography into outstanding art form. Europe, and especially Germany, was for a short time the leader in fashion photography.

In the middle of 1940′s, fashion magazine companies started be open to United States, where Vogue and Harpers Bazaar continued their old rivalry. Top Fashion photographers Irving Penn, Martin Munkacsi, Richard Avedon, and Louise Dahl-Wolfe began changing the shape the look of fashion photography for the following decades .

Richard Avedon revolutionized fashion photography and redefined the role of the fashion photographer with his imaginative images of the modern woman .

After the deaths of Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts, some of today’s most famous fashion photographers are Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, Shaun Alexander and Annie Leibovitz.
